Thoughts for Memorial Day Weekend.
When I see a window sticker on a business proclaiming “We Support Our Troops,” I wonder what the business owners do to justify the statement. Do they pay extra taxes? Do they set aside an hour a week for employees to knit camo scarves to send to service members overseas? In most cases their “support” is limited to buying a window sticker to demonstrate their patriotism. A more concrete and positive declaration would be “We Hire and Promote Veterans.”
A man or woman who spends two or more years in the military has made a serious commitment to the nation. That type of commitment warrants a similar commitment on the part of employers. The veteran enters the work force with a civilian experience deficit, but he or she has also acquired skills and abilities seldom achieved outside of the military.
